About Us
The Gold Foundation and GHHS
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation (APGF) is an international not-for-profit organization committed to infusing and sustaining our healthcare system with a culture of compassion, caring, and respect for patients and practitioners.
In 2002, the Foundation established the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) as a signature program to recognize medical students, residents, and faculty who practice patient-centered care by modeling the qualities of integrity, excellence, compassion, altruism, respect and empathy. GHHS chapters are based in medical schools and residency training programs and are led by Chapter Advisors. Fellows, administrators, practitioners, and notable members of the community may also be recognized and inducted into GHHS for promoting humanistic values. The Society currently has over 35,000 members in training and practice. GHHS membership is recognized as an important factor in the residency selection process. Because of this, a sortable indicator of GHHS membership was placed on the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application in 2015.
GHHS members are role models for humanistic care in their communities. Because building a network of advocates for compassionate care is a critical mission of GHHS and APGF, mentoring and service are key responsibilities of each member of the Society. GHHS chapters sponsor projects that serve community needs, encourage humanistic teachings in their medical environments, offer supportive and reflective opportunities for peers, and provide other valuable initiatives and experiences.
GHHS membership benefits include:
• International recognition of humanistic achievement
• Leadership development opportunities
• Chapter awards and grants
• Networking and mentoring connections
• Professional conferences, lectures, and workshops
• Resources to promote humanistic care in their community
