Be the Match
Bone Marrow Drive

Gold Honors Humanism Society is hosting a Be the Match Bone Marrow Registry Drive! Cancer does not discriminate, but cancer care and treatment options do. Bone marrow transplants can cure blood cancers, but not everyone has an equal chance at finding a life-saving match. The cure is held in the blood stem cells of a genetically matched donor, and 70% of patients do not have a fully matched donor in their family. They depend on Be The Match to find an unrelated blood stem cell donor.

Patients are likely to match donors who share the same ethnic background because genetic traits used to determine a match are inherited, but anyone could be a patient’s match.

Given the current makeup of the Be The Match Registry, the likelihood of finding a match ranges from 29-79% depending on a patient's ethnicity. More people are desperately needed to join the registry, as a transplant is often a patient’s last hope of survival. It's easy to join the registry; all it takes is a simple cheek swab.

You can order a swab kit by:

  1. visiting  My.BeTheMatch.org/UMNMED

  2. texting UMNMed to 61474

Laundry Love

Did you know a $10 donation will pay for laundry for a whole family?

MISSION:

The University of Minnesota GHHS chapter has participated in Laundry Love— a national, monthly service project — for the past few years. At it’s basis, Laundry Love provides individuals with quarters at a laundromat to clean their clothes. In a deeper way, it gives dignity to members of our community and provides an opportunity to all medical students to connect with the community in which we live and work.

PEOPLE SERVED:

The event occurs at Chicago Lake Coin Laundry across from the Midtown Global Market at the edge of the Phillips Neighborhood -- a neighborhood known for its rich diversity, as well as social and health disparities. In the past 3 months, despite waning funds, 52 loads of laundry have been provided to community members. In addition to the free loads of laundry, volunteers provide activities to occupy children and allow parents to focus on the task at hand or build community with others present. Volunteers also listen to the stories of those present, helping them to feel heard and connected.

DATE: Every 3rd Tuesday, 6-9 pm

WHERE: Chicago Coin Lake Laundry

MEDICAL STUDENT PARTICIPATION:

The laundromat is nestled in the same neighborhood as the Phillips Neighborhood Clinic, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis Children's Hospital, as well as many community clinics and is not far from HCMC. This project provides an opportunity for University of Minnesota medical students to interact with the community we serve outside of the hospital walls, to get a better sense of their patients as whole human beings -- rather than diagnosis or complaints. Many community members who attend are Hispanic, which provides an opportunity for medical students to practice speaking Spanish. Monthly emails are sent to all medical school classes, allowing all classes of students to participate in this opportunity, and we have had between 5-7 monthly volunteers since May 2018. We have intentionally worked on publicizing the event to be engaging and inclusive of all medical students this year.

Habitat for Humanity

We host an annual service project through Habitat for Humanity! In 2017, we helped two deserving families landscape their side-by-side homes, working in conjunction with the home owners and Master Gardeners from the University of Minnesota!
